At midday Saturday, Costa Concordia was fewer than 20 nautical miles from the port of Genoa, after just over three days of navigation.

The vessels were moving at an average speed of about 1 knot, which is expected to be slowed further to arrive at Genoa Voltri between Saturday night and Sunday morning, as according to the plan.

Weather and sea conditions on Friday were good, officials said, with rain forecast in Liguria until Saturday noon. After that, conditions were expected to improve Saturday afternoon and into Sunday.

The water quality was confirmed by samples taken Wednesday in the stern and bow area of the wreck and analyzed in the environmental lab on board the vessel Diciotti. In addition, the environmental assessment conducted by the Coast Guard helicopter Koala was good, officials said.
