Glacier Bay raises speed limit as whale sightings decline

National Park Service
'Whale waters' in Glacier Bay
The 13-knot vessel speed limit in Alaska's lower Glacier Bay will be raised to 20 knots due to a decrease in the number of humpback whales in the area.

This change, announced by Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve acting superintendent Chris Pergiel, goes into effect beginning at 5 a.m. Thursday.

In this area, vessels greater than 18 feet in length are still restricted to a mid-channel course or one nautical mile offshore.
