Gonzalo's projected path
Tuesday 8 a.m. update covers storm's location, wind speed and warnings. Hurricane Gonzalo, moving out over the Atlantic after passing through the Caribbean's northern Leeward Islands, is expected to continue strengthening into a major hurricane Tuesday. Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International have modified half a dozen itineraries between them.

Jewel of the Seas skipped Philipsburg, St. Maarten, on Monday and remained at sea. The ship is to return to the scheduled itinerary, calling at St. Johns, Antigua, on Tuesday. Explorer of the Seas' stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will be shortened, with the ship to sail at 9 p.m. Monday instead of staying overnight.

And Allure of the Seas is sailing a modified western Caribbean itinerary. The ship will visit Falmouth, Jamaica, Wednesday, and Cozumel on Friday.

Port-Canaveral-based Carnival Liberty will stay at sea Tuesday, instead of calling at St. Thomas, then will substitute Grand Cayman for St. Maarten on Wednesday and add Cozumel Thursday. Miami-based Carnival Breeze will miss La Romana in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

And Miami-based Carnival Conquest dropped Half Moon Cay on Monday, added Cozumel on Tuesday, Belize on Wednesday in lieu of St. Thomas and Roatán's Mahogany Bay on Thursday instead of San Juan. The ship will substitute Costa Maya for Grand Turk on Thursday.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for St. Martin and St. Bart's. Dangerous surf and swells were expected to impact the northern Leeward Islands.

Gonzalo's maximum sustained winds were near 110 mph/175 km/h, with higher guests. Additional strengthening was forecast and the National Hurricane Center in Miami predicted Gonzalo would bulk up into a major hurricane Tuesday.
