Hey, big spender: Princess Cruises' Australia survey
Men are bigger spenders than women during a cruise and are more than likely to buy something special for their partners.

That is the finding of the inaugural shopping study conducted by Princess Cruises Australia.

Of the 1,000 people surveyed, men were far more generous than women, with 27% saying they bought presents for their partners.

Only 7% of women bought for their partners, saying they mainly shopped for themselves.

The majority of men—67%—said they preferred to shop with their partners, while only 44% of women nominated partners as their favoured shopping companions.

The least favoured were children and parents.

Princess Cruises Australia’s public relations manager, Meg Koffel, said the survey was conducted to get a better insight into the habits of Australian travellers as the company expands its on-board shopping.

Diamond Princess has returned to Australia for a summer of cruising following a multimillion-dollar drydock which saw the addition of new luxury boutiques offering designer brands such as Burberry, Coach and Salvatore Ferragamo as well as OMEGA watches and Swarovski crystal.

The 116,000gt ship is halfway through a Christmas shopping cruise which departed Sydney December 14 with 2,670 passengers expected to spend close to A$400,000 during Wednesday’s call at Melbourne.

‘Thankfully, there is no baggage limit on cruise ships as we expect our passengers will be filling more than a few Christmas stockings with their Melbourne shopping haul,’ Koffel said.
