La Goulette reinforces security and safety measures

La Goulette reinforces security and safety measures
Tunisia’s Office of Shipping and Ports, responsible for the management of La Goulette port, has taken steps to reinforce security and safety measures both shoreside and waterside for visiting cruise ships and passengers.

The new directorate general of the Tunisian Office of Shipping and Ports invited representatives from ministerial departments, shipping agents, tour operators, Customs and Border Police to a meeting to discuss the security and safety both at La Goulette Cruise Terminal and on shore excursions offered to passengers.

As a result, portside safety and security measures on the dock and around berthed vessels have been reinforced in coordination with the Port Authority, Border Police, and Customs and Marine National Guard services and include a permanent zodiac control around the cruise ships by the National Guard, presence of the Border Police team during any visit and a minimum of at least two guards for the ship at berth.

Border Police will also step up monitoring of access badges at the entrance to the port and searches of taxi cabs, buses and any other vehicles accessing the Tourist Village at La Goulette Cruise Terminal using search dog mirrors and metal detectors and a scanners for passengers returning from tours and for all operators accessing the terminal.

Lotfi El Ajmi, director of foreign relations and international co-operation, Office of Shipping and Ports in Tunis, commented, ‘we are constantly working on meeting cruise line’s expectations'.  A second security scanner is being placed at La Goulette Cruise Terminal which is entirely under video surveillance, he added.
