MedCruise participates at 1st Sustainable Management of Cruise Destinations school
MedCruise participated at the First Sustainable Management and Participatory Governance of Cruise Destinations School, organised by the Research in Shipping and Ports (RESHIP) Laboratory of the University of the Aegean, in Santorini last week.

On behalf of MedCruise, Aimilia Papachristou from the general secretariat, attended the last days of the summer school where she spoke about the existing waste reception facilities in MedCruise ports, and pointed out the importance of environmental management in cruise ports.

She also highlighted that the development of the European cruise industry is a key pillar of the EU’s Blue Growth strategy and that in collaboration with cruise lines, Medcruise port members in the Med and its adjoining seas are actively promoting the sustainable practice and profile of cruise activities.

The MedCruise presentation was based on data collected as part of the port association’s participation along with Costa Cruises and RINA, amongst others, in the LIFE+ Sustainable Cruise project.

The programme was attended by more than 30 participants, stakeholders and partners and included discussion on the competition between conventional tourism and cruise tourism, and the environmental effects of cruising.
