Tearful Schettino paints himself as a Concordia scapegoat
The Costa Concordia captain's defense attorney called Francesco Schettino a victim of the January 2012 shipwreck where 32 people died.

According to Italy's ANSA news service, Schettino on Wednesday told the Grosseto court where he's being tried that he 'also died' when the ship hit the rocks off Giglio, and broke into sobs when describing his pain.

AFP reported the captain claimed he was being made the scapegoat for the grounding.

Prosecutors are seeking a 26-year prison term for Schettino, who is charged with manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship.

A verdict is expected soon.
