Seatrade Cruise Global to explore nuclear-powered ships, latest green initiatives

The latest thinking on sustainability in the cruise industry will be shared at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, including a session on harnessing nuclear power. 

Navigating to Net Zero - Nuclear-Powered Cruise Ships!’ takes place on April 9 1 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. in the Safety and Sustainability Theatre and is slated to include an overview of the technology; regulatory and legal issues; implications for ship construction; safety and security concerns; capital costs and financing challenges; refuelling and waste disposal; insurance challenges and more. 

Seatrade Cruise Global will take place April 8-11 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in tandem with F&B@Sea, April 10-11, at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center in Miami.  

Nurturing a climate-conscious workforce

‘Building for Sustainable Talent: ESG’s role in Attracting and Retaining a Climate-Conscious Workforce’ is part of the Tomorrow's Talent Today programme on April 8. The session will look at the vital intersection of ESG principles and hiring culture within the cruise industry, exploring effective communication, industry values and messaging around expectations for new staff. The session will be held in Room 203 / 205 3:30 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Net Zero or Net Hero?

In the Cruising Innovations Theatre from 10:15 a.m. - 11 a.m. on April 10, the ‘Net Zero or Net Hero: Accomplishments and Challenges’ panel will assess the industry’s progress towards pursuing net zero emissions by 2050. It will hone in on emerging methods beyond traditional fuels and engines, examining innovative approaches and the use of data analytics and artificial intelligence to shape the future of cruise. Discussion will also focus on eco-friendly port infrastructure, compliance with regulations and more. 

Sustainability is also weaved into Wednesday’s Retail Day schedule, with ‘Embracing Sustainability in Cruise Retail’ taking place on the same day from 3:15 p.m. - 3:50 p.m. in Room 201 / 202, addressing what sustainability means in the context of retail design and product offer on board cruise ships, how profit and purpose in this sector can be combined and what product/brand categories best tap into the consumer demand for more sustainable goods.

A dynamic forum

In the Cruising Innovations Theatre on the show floor, there will be two sessions on April 11 dedicated to ‘Technical Advances in Safe and Sustainable Cruising’ (10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. / 11:15 a.m. - noon). These will take attendees on an immersive journey into cutting-edge innovations and interdisciplinary expertise where they can explore transformative technologies poised to shape the future of cruising, and innovators and experts will deliver presentations and demonstrations.
